EXCELLENCE AT YOUR CRAFT

by Michael Hamline, Editor / Published September 2016

I have enjoyed watching the opening weekend of the 31st Olympiad. As my wife and I watched the women’s gymnastics, I was amazed to hear the story of 41-year-old Oksana Chusovitina representing Uzbekistan in her seventh Olympics. To have the drive and the skills to compete against women 20 years younger or more is an amazing testimony to perseverance and hard work. Another example of hard work and training was on display through Michael Phelps as he took part in the 4x100m freestyle relay squad. In second place at the time, Phelps was able to overtake his French counterpart to gain the lead, a lead that the Americans would not relinquish as they went on to win the gold medal. Afterwards, Phelps was interviewed and candidly confessed that he had not trained as hard for the 2012 London Olympics and was viewing the Rio Olympics as his redemption or comeback.

What does the Olympics have to do with pressure washing, you may be asking? Very simply, individuals who make up the businesses within the industry should desire to excel at their craft or trade. Each individual should be willing to put in the time and effort (hard work) to get the job done in the best manner possible. This means being devoted to ongoing education, improving processes, and tweaking structures for more efficient outcomes. The point is there must be a full level of engagement in the business in order to achieve excellence and success.

In calling for a pursuit of excellence, this does not mean that your business will have a bump-free ride, or that you won’t find yourself, like Michael Phelps, not giving your all at times. However, it does mean that for the long haul you are committed to devoting the time, energy, and resources it takes to have your business “win the gold.” Cleaner Times is one of the resources that can be used to help your business excel through information provided in various published articles; other helpful resources are trade organizations such as CETA, PWNA, and WJTA-IMCA, which will be putting on trade shows in October and November. To learn more about these organizations (and their tradeshows) and others like them, visit their websites, which can be found on the Industry Calendar on page 20.
