
A nozzle may not be the first thing a contractor considers when configuring a pressure washer, but it’s an important component.
Direction, spray pattern, and force can be manipulated by the type of nozzle used. Among the components of a pressure washer, the nozzle is the one that most of us came to understand as children.
When children play with a garden hose—with a nozzle or without—they learn how nozzles affect direction, spray patterns, and force that contribute to the functionality of pressure washers. In fact, they often learn more if there’s no nozzle and they use thumbs and fingers to direct the water coming from the spout.
Hands-on learning to be sure. All of it is valuable and good to remember as adults.
For instance, most parents have seen one or more children bouncing a nozzle across pavement when pulling a hose. We know why small children pull instead of lift and carry. But adults have no excuse. And that’s where we begin the reminders about nozzle care.
Basic care of nozzles begins with being mindful. “A lot of it comes down to how they’re handled,” says Charlie Wehrspann, a product support team member at Mi-T-M Corporation in Peosta, IA.
“Nozzles get dragged across concrete or bumped into hard surfaces, which can damage them,” explains Wehrspann. (Days are long, often exhausting, but it’s not just the nozzle but hoses and trigger units that suffer from pulling.)
There are, of course, many ways to damage nozzles by a lapse in attention. “With surface cleaners, hitting the spray bar on something solid can also cause problems,” says Wehrspann.
“Rotary nozzles are another big one,” explains Wehrspann. “You always want to start spraying with the nozzle pointed down, then bring it up.”
The reason for the nozzle down and then up approach? “If you start with it pointed up, that initial burst of pressure can damage the inside parts,” says Wehrspann. “Some of those internal components are pretty delicate, so it doesn’t take much.”
Avoiding mistreatment serves as a reminder for all equipment. Regarding nozzles, is there anything that should be done in terms of specific attention?
“It’s a good idea to check them once in a while for clogs or wear,” says Wehrspann of special attention for nozzles. “If you’re using your pressure washer for business, replacing nozzles once a year can help keep everything running the way it should.”
Selecting the correct nozzle for a project isn’t difficult, yet it does require some thought.
“The big thing is making sure you’re using the right nozzle size for your machine,” says Wehrspann. “People often focus on the spray angle or pattern, which is important—red, yellow, green, and white—but the size is what really matters.”
How critical is the size? “If you grab the wrong size, it can throw everything off,” says Wehrspann.
“Too large, and your pressure drops,” explains Wehrspann. “Too small, and you can actually put extra strain on the pump. A lot of times people think there’s something wrong with their equipment when it’s really just the wrong nozzle.”
Matching the nozzle to the machine is not difficult. It just takes a bit of time to think before proceeding. Time invested in being attentive to nozzles ensures they attain the service life for which they were designed.
“Just take care with them, don’t bang them around, and they’ll last longer,” says Wehrspann. “It’s simple, but it makes a difference.”
The word nozzle derives from the word “nose” in Middle English. And it’s a diminutive form of the word (yes, “little nose”). In the 16h century “nozzle” got affixed to the socket in candle holders. During the Industrial Revolution it came into use as a technical term to describe the add-on sorts of connectors it describes in our context. Name aside, the function of a nozzle is easy to understand. In fact, when trouble arises with a nozzle, we usually can pinpoint the source right away. Unexpected spray points signal thread damage or warped washers.
The unexpected spray direction also reminds us that we probably did something to damage a good nozzle or did not respect the age (and the replacement needed) of the old nozzle. As always, proper maintenance prevents trouble, including with nozzles.
We put the question of whether nozzles receive the attention that they require to Ryan Lindaman, vice president of sales at Barens Inc. in Seneca, PA. He gave us a candid response.
“In my opinion, no, they do not get the attention they deserve,” says Lindaman. “Problems can be avoided with proper nozzle care.”
There are some common ways in which nozzles are mistreated, says Lindaman, and he summarizes them for us.
“Poor water quality or running dirty water through the nozzle is one way a nozzle is treated less than well,” explains Lindaman. “The diminished water quality can lead to early erosion of the orifice and cause premature wear of the spray pattern,” he notes.
“Another form of mistreatment is dropping nozzles on hard surfaces,” Lindaman says. “Even the smallest nick on a nozzle can cause an issue with the spray pattern or create premature wear.”
Trouble may also follow by “using the wrong size nozzle for your machine,” explains Lindaman. “Oversized can lead to lower pressure and poor cleaning, where undersized can cause pump strain.”
Finally, even when a nozzle is not in use, it should be treated with care. “Poor storage—letting nozzles sit with chemical or water, or exposed to the elements—can lead to corrosion on lower quality materials and will ultimately affect performance,” says Lindaman.
Get a good start when assembling a machine by answering one question before choosing a nozzle, says Lindaman. “What psi and flow does my machine run on?”
“Answers will help determine the correct nozzle size you need, which will ultimately help you operate more effectively overall,” explains Lindaman.
Machines reach their full-service life when cared for properly. So do nozzles.
“Run a nozzle clean with fresh water at the end of the day and store it properly,” says Lindaman. “Also, don’t use it as a multi-tool to move debris out of the way or scrape a surface clean. Let the water do the work.”
Deploying nozzles demands adherence to all applicable guidelines from OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration]. Applicable standards may differ with the type of work being done.
For example, contractors using nozzles on machines for surface preparation and preservation must follow OSHA standard number 1915.34, which requires dead-man control devices. Such automatic shutoffs should the operator become incapacitated are a good idea on any machine even if no abrasives are used.
Contractors who must switch between spraying chemical and rinsing with great frequency can choose a dual lance that incorporates both a chemical nozzle and a high-pressure nozzle. In 2026 most of the nozzle configurations on the wish lists of veteran contractors are available.
Fortunately, contractors who work on sensitive surfaces may not have to make choices about nozzles. If they have responded to a request for proposals, the RFP will likely specify the type of equipment that’s to be used right down to the nozzle.
Best practices encompass not only optimal results in cleaning (or surface preparation) but also the absence of any damage. A zero-degree (red) nozzle might be used to dislodge gum from a sturdy cast-iron fence, but it could yield enough intensity to damage other surfaces (e.g., a cedar bench).
A wider spray—with a 15-degree (yellow), 25-degree (green), or 40-degree (white) nozzle—will be gentler on the substrate than the highly focused red. The (approximately) 65-degree (black) nozzle is used in application of chemical cleaners (detergents).
Again, there are configurations of nozzles that meet almost every conceivable contractor need. With a rotating nozzle, it’s possible to marry the force provided by a zero-degree nozzle with a wider spray. And an adjustable nozzle can allow a quick change between spray patterns. The color-coding of nozzles reduces the chance a contractor will attach the wrong nozzle. It improves both safety and efficiency on the job site.
There’s plenty of generic (and AI-driven) advice available in the digital realm regarding which nozzle to use on which substrate, but the best advice will certainly come from experienced contractors (via professional society meetings and courses) and distributors (who get feedback on results from the customers they serve). Also use the information available at manufacturers of websites. However, person-to-person communication built on a foundation of experience typically remains the very best way to get advice about an exacting choice for a nozzle.
Consider window washing. While a 40-degree (white) nozzle is often cited as suitable for windows, the age, exposure and composition of the pane (substrate) must be the final determinant. More than one child playing with a garden hose and a garden-variety nozzle has managed to crack the window of a house or breach the adhesive that holds a pane in place.
Nozzle selection and care are relatively easy, but they are not child’s play.
